MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression Querubin has weakened into a low-pressure area (LPA), but the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) yesterday said that rains will persist amid its interaction with other weather systems, particularly the shear line and northeast monsoon.

“Tropical Depression Querubin has weakened into a low-pressure area and has a medium chance of redevelopment into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours,” the state weather bureau announced.

At a press conference, PAGASA deputy administrator for research and development Marcelino Villafuerte II said the LPA and the shear line will cause heavy to intense rains in some areas.

“We expect that will have interaction with the shear line. Many areas in the eastern section of the country, particularly Southern Luzon and even the eastern section of Visayas, will be affected. That’s why we issued a heavy rainfall outlook,” Villafuerte said.

At 2 p.m. yesterday, the LPA was located 215 kilometers east northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

For her part, PAGASA weather specialist Veronica Torres said the LPA will bring rains mostly in the Visayas and Mindanao areas.

Torres said heavy to intense rains – or 100 up to 200 millimeters of rains until noon today – are expected in Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur; while moderate to heavy or 50 to 100 mm of rains are expected in Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Cebu, Bohol, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Misamis Oriental and Davao Oriental.

She said that from today up to noon tomorrow, heavy to intense rains are expected in Sorsogon, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Biliran, Dinagat Islands and Surigao del Norte; while moderate to heavy rains may be experienced in Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Catanduanes, Masbate, Romblon, Aklan, Capiz, Negros Occidental, Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor, Camiguin, Misamis Oriental, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur.

PAGASA weather specialist Samuel Duran said the shear line and northeast monsoon will bring rains to Metro Manila and the northern part of Luzon.
