Gilas girls now 43rd in FIBA list
MANILA, Philippines — Gilas Pilipinas girls climbed to No. 43 in the recent FIBA World rankings after ruling Division B of the FIBA U18 Asia Championship earlier this year.
With 251 points, the Gilas belles jumped six rungs from 49th last and is now No. 7 in Asia.
From 10th last year, Gilas leaped three places in the region just behind FIBA Asia champion Australia (world No. 5), bronze-medalist Japan (No. 6), silver winner China (No. 18), South Korea (No. 21), New Zealand (No. 24) and Chinese Taipei (No. 27).
Gilas girls will join the said countries in the Division A next edition after sweeping Division B back in June in Shenzhen, China.
Led by Ava Fajardo, Gabby Ramos and Naomi Panganiban, Gilas girls dominated Lebanon in the finale, 95-64, to complete a 5-0 division sweep.
It was a sweet redemption for the Gilas girls after settling for a bronze medal in the 2022 edition.
