PASSI City, Iloilo – The first Mayor Stephen A. Palmares 9Ball National Open was an undeniable success, drawing the country’s biggest names in billiards for the three-day event. Pool legends Efren Reyes, Django Bustamante, Ronnie Alcano, Warren Kiamco and succeeding champions like Johann Chua, Chezca Centeno and 17-year-old sensation AJ Manas challenging the old guard.
It was a once-in-a-lifetime thrill for local fans and even local government officials from outside Passi to get up close with their favorite players. As of this writing, the quarterfinals were to begin in earnest after a grueling two-day round of 32. Reyes was ranged against Jaybee Sucal of Sarangani. Chua, who dominated Alcano Saturday night, was matched up with Manas. Bustamante, who escaped Cebuano champion Kiamco, was facing Bonnie Penticase. A pair of underdogs rounded out the cast. Fans filled the Passi Arena.
“We strive to give the citizens of Passi one big event every month,” says Atty. Palmares, an unparalleled sports lover. “We love many different sports here.”
This year alone, the city has hosted the PBA, The Asian Tournament, an international mountain bike event, an ABBA tribute concert, and many others. In the following months, this quiet, peaceful community will hold an arnis championship, the PVL, and the opening leg of The Asian Tournament’s summer games. An impressive list for this up and coming locale.
“I’ve been to many places, but I’ve never experienced hospitality like this,” admits two-time Asian Games gold medalist Kiamco. “I hope we can come back next year.”
“We’re all happy to be here,” says 2010 World 9Ball champion Bustamante. “The people are friendly; the food is amazing. I hope this becomes an annual event.”
Fans were giddy having all this pool power in their midst. They had to be restrained from encroaching onto the playing area for selfies with their favorites. One family even presented Reyes with a large homemade painting of him for his signature. What a thrill it was for their young son when he obliged. Those alone made all of Mayor Palmares’ effort that much more fulfilling. Everyone was happy in Passi.
