MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Azkals kick off their comeback tour Thursday in the Asia 7’s Championship at the EV Arena in Elmina, Shah Alam.
Headlined by former Azkals captain Stephan Schrock, the new incarnation of the Azkals are bunched with India, host Malaysia and Hong Kong in Group B in the elims of the prestigious 7-a-side football tournament.
The squad aims for a rousing start in a double-header assignment versus Hong Kong at 6 p.m. and the home squad at 10 p.m.
Schrock and Co. wrap up their initial slate tomorrow versus India at 5:30 p.m. before heading to the crossover quarterfinals scheduled later that night.
If successful in the KO quarters, the Azkals proceed to the semis on Saturday for a potential trip to Sunday’s finale.
Meanwhile, Japan, Brunei, Singapore and Vietnam make up Group A.
Schrock said the Filipinos are determined to live up to the “Azkals” moniker as they embark on this new footballing journey.
“This is the next step in keeping alive the Azkals name which has become synonymous with Philippine football,” said Schrock.
"It is very important to continue the Azkals legacy on how as the former minnows of Asian football, we were able to rise and overcome the challenges before. Hopefully by using the moniker again, we can once more inspire all aspiring football players in the country,” he added.
