Alice Guo's Senate turnover set for September 6
MANILA, Philippines (Updated 7:10 p.m.) — Alice Guo will finally face the Senate on Friday, September 6, months after the upper chamber issued an arrest warrant against her.
In the middle of the Senate probe grilling Alice’s purported sister Shiela Guo, Sen. Risa Hontiveros and lawmakers were informed that Philippine authorities already gained physical custody of the dismissed Bamban, Tarlac mayor in Indonesia.
Alice is expected to arrive in the country at 6:18 p.m. today, September 5.
“She will be surrendered tomorrow in Senate,” Hontiveros said during the hearing of the Justice and Human Rights panel.
Despite the long list of cases filed against Alice, only the Senate has an arrest warrant out for her.
The Senate issued the arrest warrant in July after Alice and her cohorts failed to show up to multiple hearings probing their links to Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators.
Alice faces both human trafficking raps and money laundering complaints.
Alice and several of her cohorts were able to evade authorities for months despite the Senate hearings catapulting the former mayor into the national limelight.
Hontiveros divulged the flight of the Guos in August, saying that they were able to slip through Philippine authorities on July 17 and escape to Malaysia.
Philippine authorities scrambled to verify this information, able to independently confirm that the Guos were able to escape.
Alice and her family have become some of the faces of POGOs in the country. While the gaming hubs were legal at the time, they also became heavily affiliated with crimes such as human trafficking and illegal drugs.
