'How not to make an announcement': McGregor chides Pacquiao over Mayweather rematch teaser

MANILA, Philippines – Conor McGregor had a colorful reaction to the news of a possible Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather fight this year.

On New Year’s Eve, Pacquiao teased a rematch with Mayweather.

During a guest appearance in Japan, Pacquiao was asked by Rizin CEO Nobuyuki Sakakibara if he would "please fight Floyd Mayweather" this year.

Pacquiao said he is "ready" and nodded.

"[In 2024], I hope to see you in Japan again with a big fight against..."

Pacquiao looked around for Sakakibara, who said "Floyd Mayweather."

"Floyd Mayweather. I thought you did not want me to say that," the Filipino boxing icon said.

McGregor, for his part, saw an opportinity to mock Pacquiao, taking to social media.

“The Notorious,” in an Instagram story, posted the clip of the announcement.

As animated as always, McGregor quipped that Pacquiao’s announcement is “a lesson in how not to make an announcement.”

This was followed by a crying laughing emoji.

So far, Mayweather is yet to confirm the rematch with Pacquiao, whom he beat in 2015 in what ended up to be the richest fight in boxing history.

A few years ago, McGregor was tied to a possible match against Pacquiao, but it did not pan out.

It can be recalled that Pacquiao had a bitter legal dispute with McGregor’s management agency Paradigm, resulting in the botching of plans to pit the two combat sports stars.

A US court last year even ordered Pacquiao to pay Paradigm $5.1 million as penalty for breach of contract.

Meanwhile, McGregor's latest social media post isn't the first time he chided the retired boxer. The Sun, quoting a voice note from McGregor that he uploaded on X (formerly Twitter), reported McGregor demanding Pacquiao to pay up what he claims he is owed.

"Where’s my $8 million from that court case, Manny Pacquiao? You owe me $8 million, Manny…" McGregor can be heard as saying.

Pacquiao hasn't been paying attention to McGregor, previously telling MMA Junkie that the Irishman is "not active anymore." – With a report from Dino Maragay
