Samboy, Phl basketball’s Skywalker, 61
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine basketball family has lost a legend.
Avelino “Samboy” Lim passed away last night, according to an announcement on his official Facebook account.
Best known as “The Skywalker” due to his high-flying, daring style of play, Lim bid goodbye at Medical City in the presence of his family and close friends.
He was 61.
“A man of faith, exceptional courage, humility and grace. He embodied the very best of humanity,” read the statement.
Lim suffered a coma in 2014 and has since been paralyzed in a long medical battle prior to his passing.
“The Skywalker” was a three-time NCAA champion and MVP with the Letran Knights before carving a legendary path in the PBA, marked by nine championships with the San Miguel Beermen.
The No. 9 jersey of Lim, who was also a staple member of the Philippine team, was retired by the Beermen, where he played his entire PBA career.
Lim was also a member of the PBA’s 25 Greatest Players and an icon of sportsmanship throughout his remarkable career.
“Heaven gained an angel just in time for Christmas. We love you Samboy, thank you for loving all of us unconditionally. No more pain nor suffering. Goodbye for now. You will be in our hearts forever,” the statement added.
