Filipino runners gear up for 29th Rome Marathon

MANILA, Philippines – The 29th Rome Marathon slated March 17, 2024 is expected to draw Filipino runners from all over the world.

Aside from the 42.195km marathon, Filipinos also look forward to taking part in the the relay, 5km fun run and cheer station side events.

Next year's edition will see the return of Filipino-Dutch Rachel de Weerd and Italy-based Lorenzo Castro Jr. 

The 49-year-old De Weerd, a sprinter and ultra runner from Ifugao province, entered the relay team last year. 

"It's her dream to run in the Eternal City and next year, she will join the full marathon," said Italia Marathon Club member Alona Cochon.

De Weerd, representing AV Veluwe (The Netherlands) team, won the silver medal at a half-marathon event in Breda, The Netherlands last October 2.

Castro of Maiano G.S. Club, on the other hand, was the top Filipino finisher at the 2023 Rome Marathon, placing fifth (2:39:20). Last October 8, he ruled the Eco Marathon Pratese (2:46:23).
