Philippines concludes 19th Asian Games with identical gold medal haul as 2018

MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippines has replicated its four gold medal-finish in the 2018 Asian Games in this year’s Hangzhou meet.

The country’s journey in the 19th Asiad has come to an end after karateka Junna Tsukii bowed out of the women’s kumite -50 kilogram division Sunday.

Tsukii bowed against Srey Phea Chonn of Cambodia in the round of 16 Sunday afternoon.

Chonn finished the match victorious after garnering three yukos (one point,) compared to Tsukii’s two.

With the result, the Philippines ended its Hangzhou Asiad stint with four gold medals, two silver medals and 12 bronze medals.

The gold medals were courtesy of pole vaulter EJ Obiena, ju-jitsu fighters Meggie Ochoa and Annie Ramirez and basketball team Gilas Pilipinas.

The silver medals were courtesy of boxer Eumir Marcial and wushu’s Arnel Mandal.

Wushu artists Jones Inso, Clemente Tabugara Jr. and Gideon Padua brought home bronze medals.

Tennister Alex Eala and the duo of Eala and Francis Alcantara also recorded third place finishes.

The Philippine sepak takraw team for quadrant and wegu; BMX’s Patrick Coo; ju-jitsu’s Jenna Napolis; karate’s Sakura Alforte; taekwondo’s Patrick Perez; and weightlifting’s Elreen Ando secured bronze medals.

The Philippines also brought home four gold medals and two silver medals in the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.

However, the Filipino athletes, in 2018, ended with 15 bronze medals.

“The 19th Asian Games have been an incredible display of talent and determination from our Filipino athletes,” PSC chairman Richard Bachmann said in a statement.

“Our 4 gold, 2 silver and 12 bronze medals, partnered with the tremendous commitment of each athlete in their respective sports, have made our nation proud,” he added.
