Torre stamps class in Guam Chess Open
MANILA, Philippines — Filipino Grandmaster Eugene Torre came back from retirement in topping the 2023 Guam International Open Chess Tournament at the Dusit Beach Resort in Guam over the weekend.
The chess Hall-of-Famer and Asia’s first GM went perfect in winning all his nine games in the standard tournament, beating William Gunn, Daniel Combs, Cyle Sarmiento, Rudolph Soriano, Kohei Yonemitsu, Daniel Doria, Elmer Prudente, Kyle Garrison and Rogelio Orio.
“This win is for my countrymen” said the 71-year-old icon, now focused mainly on being the national men’s team coach.
Meanwhile, Louie Salvador edged Kahlel Abris via tiebreak after the two ended up tied with seven points apiece to rule a tourney sponsored by National Master Marlon Bernardino.
