MANILA, Philippines — Fil-German Christian Standhardinger is hanging up his Gilas Pilipinas jersey for good after helping the Nationals reclaim the Southeast Asian Games gold in Cambodia.

The 33-year-old bruiser said he had his realization minutes before the gold-medal showdown against the import-laden Cambodians while looking at his swollen knees.

“I knew I could not withstand the double duty and unfortunately, nothing showed that more clearly than this tournament (SEAG), where the demands were intensified,” the Ginebra ace posted on his social media accounts.

“With a heavy heart, I must announce my retirement from the Philippine national team. I am immensely proud to witness that Gilas is in capable hands. As you all saw, Brandon Rosser and Michael Philips showcased exceptional skills every single game. The future of Philippine basketball is in good hands, and this brings me both relief and joy,” he said.

Standhardinger, who can play as a local in the SEAG but is classified as “naturalized player” in FIBA tournaments, retired from Gilas duties with gold medals in the 2017, 2019 and 2023 SEA Games.

“Out of the three golds I have proudly won for my country, this one holds a special place in my heart. Surrounded by remarkable individuals, both as players and more importantly as human beings, I couldn’t ask for a better last experience,” he wrote.

“My journey in the Philippines (Gilas) began with a SEA Games gold medal and it seems fitting that it concludes with one as well,” the two-time PBA Best Player of the Conference awardee said.
