UST ends NU’s 20-game win run
MANILA, Philippines — University of Santo Tomas dropped the upset axe on reigning champion National U, 25-23, 27-25, 17-25, 22-25, 15-11, and sent the Lady Bulldogs crashing back to earth last night in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Eya Laure led the party with 18 points on 14 hits and four blocks laced by 14 digs as the Golden Tigresses snapped the Lady Bulldogs’ 20-game winning streak dating back to Season 82 in a classic duel that lasted two hours and 31 minutes.
Regine Jurado unloaded 18 of her own with Milena Alessandrini bucking off an injury to chip in 14 more points and 10 receptions for Santo Tomas, the last team to beat mighty NU in 2019 courtesy of a 27-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-16 triumph.
Maria Cassandra Carballo adorned the table with 24 excellent sets while Maria Bernadett Pepito provided 19 receptions in the big win that forced a three-way tie between UST, NU and Adamson at No. 2 with 2-1 cards. La Salle paces the race with a 2-0 record so far.
“It’s been an up and down game. It’s tough with all the undertakings but we needed to overcome it. Luckily, I think NU had a bad game but it still proved to be a steep climb just to beat them. We needed to work for every point of it. Thankfully, we did,” said UST coach Kung Fu Reyes.
