MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala’s roaring US Open glory in New York City was heard and felt all the way in the Philippines, where supporters, fans and officials stayed awake in the wee hours to witness history written.

As Eala tearfully delivered a speech in native tongue after capturing the country’s first singles junior Grand Slam crown, the nation rejoiced in unison led by top sports officials in Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Rep. Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino and newly-minted Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Noli Eala.

“The historic win of Alex is a testament to the Filipino spirit and our strength of character,” said Noli, uncle of Alex, crediting her dedication and sacrifice in being away from home as a long-time scholar of the Rafael Nadal Academy in Spain.

“She has proven that the Filipino can be at par with anyone if given a genuine pathway for success. Truly a proud moment for the country,” he added.

Eala, only 17 years old with doubles titles in the 2020 Australian Open and 2021 French Open, finally copped her first career singles Grand Slam with a 6-2, 6-4 finals win over Czech Republic’s Lucie Havlickova.

Tolentino believes winning the US major is only the beginning for Eala, who is bound for greater heights in her promising career.

“Alex will go a long, long way in her tennis career, which is just budding. We expect Alex to bring more honors to the country, and her accomplishment would definitely inspire young Filipinos to follow in her footsteps,” he said.

Boxing legend and former senator Manny Pacquiao also tipped his hat off to Eala while Olympic weightlifting gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz and pole vault champion EJ Obiena savored the triumphant moment of the country’s future sports torchbearer.

“A nation of over a hundred million people takes pride in your accomplishment. My family and I salute you. Keep being an inspiration. Work hard and stay humble. The world has yet to see more of you and what we Filipinos are capable of. Congratulations, Alex Eala,” said Pacquiao, the world’s only eight-division boxing champion.
