‘Gregzilla’ off to Japan
MANILA, Philippines — “Gregzilla” is headed to Japan.
In the freezer since the early part of last season’s PBA Governors’ Cup, behemoth Greg Slaughter is re-energizing his pro career with a stint with Japanese club Rizing Zephyr Fukuoka in the B. League second division.
The 7-foot Slaughter signed up with Fukouka for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons.
“I’m looking forward to joining the team and playing for their great city and fans,” the 33-year-old center said yesterday.
Slaughter hooked up with the Japanese outfit on the heels of the impasse of his contract negotiation with NorthPort.
The former Ateneo slotman hasn’t played since the Batang Pier’s 108-92 loss to Barangay Ginebra last Dec. 17, 2021.
Slaughter’s contract with NorthPort expired last Jan. 31 and talks for an extension bogged down. As such, he didn’t suit up again for the remainder of the season-ending tournament and has missed the action in the ongoing Philippine Cup as well.
The 2017 Govs Cup Best Player of the Conference will face off with compatriots Kobe Paras (Altiri Chiba) and Jordan Heading (Nagasaki Velca) in the Division 2 hostilities.
