Gilas recruit Caelum Harris looks forward to overseas experience
MANILA, Philippines – Fil-Am teen Caelum Harris is looking forward to expand his basketball horizons with the Gilas Pilipinas program.
Having played hoops in the US his whole life, the latest addition to the Philippine national team said he's eager to experience a different kind of play.
According to the 16-year-old swingman, the promise of improving his game was what easily convinced him to agree to join Gilas.
"It was one of those opportunities that don't usually come to younger athletes around my age and I just told [my parents] yes as soon as they told me about it," Harris said on the recent episode of PlayitrightTV.
"Because I was just like, I feel like it's a chance for me to just learn from people, to learn about 'westernized' basketball," he added.
Harris is a sophomore for Stewarts Creek High School in Smyrna, Tennessee.
The Tennessee native won’t pass up on the chance to play in a different environment to enrich his basketball skills.
"I've played in America, I've never really watched overseas games like that, I've seen highlights, I've watched highlights over the Filipino team but I don't really turn on the TV and just like hey, I'm gonna sit here and watch overseas basketball," Harris said.
"So I feel like it will be a great experience for me to get over there [in the Philippines]," he added.
Gilas head coach Chot Reyes said that he wants to integrate Harris as soon as possible to the Gilas program.
Though Harris is pegged as a stalwart of the Gilas Under-23 program with LeBron Lopez, Reyes included him and Lopez in the men's rosters as soon as the 31st Southeast Asian Games in May.
