MANILA, Philippines — Boxing icon, Sen. Manny Pacquiao broke new ground over the weekend by launching his own esports team in the country, anticipating the boom in electronic gaming now led by advanced economies in the world.

“We are launching Team Pacquiao to sow the seed of Filipino excellence in international esports competitions,” he said during the formal launching of Team Pacquiao GG (TPGG) at the City of Dreams in Parañaque City.

“Our purpose is to become the pound for pound esports heavyweights of Southeast Asia through community engagements, professional teams, content creation, and charitable giving,” the presidential aspirant said.

Esports is currently dominated by world powers US, China, Japan and South Korea. It is a rapidly growing sporting industry that is generating employment and business opportunities around the world.
