Bolts enlist Bishop in lieu of Muhammad
MANILA, Philippines — The Meralco Bolts are tapping a new import in Panamanian Tony Bishop after original choice Shabazz Muhammad couldn’t leave the United States due to “family emergency.”
The 32-year-old Bishop is a well-traveled player who last played for Guaynabo in the Puerto Rican league, where he was teammates with former PBA import Renaldo Balkman.
“He’s a veteran and he’s been playing around the world for the last 11 years. Four or five days ago, his team made it to the championship, where they lost, so he’s in shape,” Meralco coach Norman Black told The STAR yesterday.
Bishop, who is expected to get his visa and fly to the country this week, assumes big responsibility for a team that was a finalist in three of the last four Governors’ Cup tournaments.
“Based on videos that I’ve seen, he has lots of versatility and can play 3, 4 and 5 (spots). He’s 6-5 and has a long wingspan. Hopefully, he’ll be a good fit to our team,” Black said of Bishop.
