MANILA, Philippines — Filipino FIDE Master Sander Severino outlasted Svitlana Solomna of Ukraine in 47 moves of a Nimzo-Indian Defense to spearhead the country’s charge in the fourth World Championships for People with Disabilities Friday night.
Severino’s triumph was one of the four by the country at the start of the nine-round tournament with 246 participants from 36 countries.
Jasper Rom, Darry Bernardo and Rodolfo Sarmiento delivered the other wins at the expense of Malwina Szewczyk of Poland, Babuk Yesu of India and Almas Shaimov of Kazakhstan, respectively.
