Maroons refute Bo exit reports
MANILA, Philippines — Bo Perasol is still the head coach of University of the Philippines amid reports that either he has stepped down from his post or his contract was not renewed.
UP officials belied the rumors, stressing that the veteran mentor remains at the helm of the Fighting Maroons and nothing has changed with regards to his status for the last five years – and counting.
“UP has formal processes in selecting varsity coaches. Right now, coach Bo is still the UP men’s basketball team head coach and he has not resigned. We are formally refuting news articles that came out with regards to coach Bo’s coaching status in UP,” said UP College of Human Kinetics dean Kiko Diaz.
Reports circulated yesterday citing Perasol’s resignation with former NU Bullpups coach Goldwin Monteverde being eyed to take over. Others said UP did not renew his coaching contract due to his upcoming managerial post promotion.
UP alumni group “Nowhere to Go But UP” also refuted such rumors especially at this unfortunate time when Perasol is mourning the loss of his mother last Thursday.
“That’s not how the UP system works. May proseso tayong dinadaanan. Hindi sa pag-leak ng istorya galing sa unnamed source. It’s still status quo today and UP has not even allowed varsity teams to meet and practice. Obviously, mukhang hindi taga-UP ang naglalabas niyan,” said the group’s head Renan Dalisay.
The entire UP community is joining Perasol and his family in their moment of grief.
Under his watch since 2016, UP has become a force to reckon with in the UAAP. In 2018, the Maroons made it to the finals for the first time in 32 years, and has continued to boost its basketball program with a bevy of prized recruits.
