Mamon women’s volley head coach

MANILA, Philippines — Odjie Mamon will be appointed head coach of the Philippine women’s volleyball team after Ramil de Jesus declined the offer, The STAR learned yesterday.

It was an interesting development as Mamon, who coaches the Santo Tomas men’s squad, was part of the selection team from the Philippine National Volleyball Federation, Inc. (PNVFI) that nominated De Jesus for the job.

Also to be appointed to the women’s team are Tai Bundit, Creamline’s Thai coach, and Grace Antigua as first and second assistants to Mamon.

Dante Alinsunurin, meanwhile, accepted the offer to coach the men’s squad for a second tour of duty after he steered it to a historic silver medal finish in the 2019 Manila Southeast Asian Games.

The PNVFI will make the official announcement next week.

De Jesus, who steered La Salle to 11 UAAP titles including three three-peat feats, would have made a comeback with the national team after he steered the squad to the bronze medal in the 2005 SEAG in Bacolod. It was not clear why he turned down the offer.
