Banal makes PBA comeback with Alaska
MANILA, Philippines — Gab Banal is set for a homecoming of sorts with Alaska Milk.
The second-generation player signed with the Aces, the very franchise his father Joel Banal coached from 2011 to 2012, for his PBA comeback.
The young Banal, who used to root for Alaska and attend the team’s practices and games when his dad was at the helm, is expected to play a key role when he dons the Aces’ jersey himself.
“We’re very excited to have on board Gab Banal. As a player, he’s what I’m looking for because he plays both ends,” Alaska coach Jeff Cariaso told The STAR.
The 6-foot-3 Banal was actually drafted in 2014 but spent the next three years as a PBA journeyman. After his stint with GlobalPort (now NorthPort) in 2017, he took his talents to the MPBL, Chooks to Go 3x3 Pilipinas and PBA D-League, and flourished.
Banal won league MVP honors in the MPBL Datu Cup in 2019 and Finals MVP in the 2017-18 D-League Foundation Cup.
“I believe he will transition well in the PBA and contribute right away for us,” Cariaso said. “Sometimes all you need is opportunity.”
Banal’s signing came just as Alaska and swingman/small forward Jeron Teng have come to terms for a renewed partnership.
“Jeron will sign today,” Teng’s agent Danny Espiritu said.
The Aces are still negotiating with starting forward Vic Manuel. “The Muscleman” has previously asked for a trade.
