MANILA, Philippines — Eric Altamirano is relishing the opportunity to play a key role in the PBA’s grand plans for 3x3 basketball with the ultimate goal of qualifying Pinoy ballers to the Olympics.

Altamirano has been named the tournament director for the 3x3 hoopfest that the PBA is launching this year.

“I’m truly honored to be chosen to run the very first PBA 3x3. I know this program is an integral part of our country’s quest to make it to the Olympics via 3x3,” Altamirano told The STAR.

The two-time champion coach is expected to lend his expertise in staging three-a-side tournaments, having previously served as Commissioner of the Chooks to Go 3x3 league.

Altamirano will be working with governor-in-charge Dickie Bachmann of Alaska and his former University of the Philippines teammates Ronnie Magsanoc and Joey Guanio to get the PBA’s maiden three-a-side tourney off and running.

The plan is to stage three or four pocket tournaments in between the 5-on-5 conferences featuring the 12 regular PBA teams and four or five guest squads.

The PBA 3x3 will follow the FIBA setup and offer ranking points that will enable top Pinoy players to compete in Olympic-qualifying tilts.

“I look forward to working with Dickie and the entire team. Together, we will craft a roadmap on how to navigate our way towards making it to the Olympics,” said Altamirano.

Bachmann announced Altamirano’s entry after the recent PBA board meeting. “Basically for me, it’s a no brainer. He’s experienced in running 3x3 tournaments,” said Bachmann.
