Valdez, Gumabao hail ABS-CBN for contribution to volleyball
MANILA, Philippines — Former rivals and now Creamline Cool Smashers teammates Michele Gumabao and Alyssa Valdez voiced out their thoughts on ABS-CBN's shutdown.
The network, which has been the television home to both Gumabao and Valdez's career in volleyball, was ordered to go off-air by the National Telecommunications Commission on Tuesday because of an expired franchise.
Gumabao took to Instagram to express her thoughts and call for an end to the shutdown.
The opposite hitter posted a photo of herself during her collegiate career with the DLSU Lady Spikers.
It was aired on ABS-CBN Sports and Action, which was known at that time as Studio 23.
Gumabao said that the sport wouldn't be where it was right now if not for the TV network.
"Volleyball is what it is now because of you. #notoabscbnshutdown," she wrote.
Valdez, meanwhile, also uploaded a throwback photo of her with the Ateneo Lady Eagles in 2014.
"Salamat sa pag bahagi ng aming mga kwento," Valdez wrote, most likely pertaining to ABS-CBN with her caption ending with three hearts of blue, green and red — the colors of the ABS-CBN logo.
Valdez and Gumabao are among a number of athletes expressing their support for the network.
Home to a number of sports leagues like the UAAP, NCAA and the Premier Volleyball League, Philippine sports may be taking a hit should the broadcaster's franchise take time to be renewed.
