MANILA, Philippines — Nazareth School of National University capped a sweep of the 82nd UAAP high school basketball with a gritty 87-80 win over FEU-Diliman in Game 2 of the best-of-three finals held behind closed doors yesterday due to the COVID-19 scare at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Seasoned slotman Carl Tamayo emerged as hero for the Bullpups, garnering a double-double of 26 points and 22 rebounds to earn the Finals MVP plum.
Guards Gerry Abadiano and Terrence Fortea backstopped him with 20 and 12 markers, respectively, as NU completed a 16-0 season mop-up for their second straight and fifth overall juniors’ basketball title in the past nine seasons.
“All our sacrifices paid off. We sustained our focus and energy throughout the whole year,” said coach Goldwin Monteverde, who will also handle the NU men’s team from former mentor Jamike Jarin starting this year.
