MANILA, Philippines — Vengeful La Salle issued a stern warning to the rest of the league after dominating fierce rival and reigning champion Ateneo, 25-17, 17-25, 25-17, 25-15, for a triumphant start in the 82nd UAAP volleyball tournament last night at the MOA Arena.
The new-look Lady Spikers, bannered by a bevy of top recruits, did not shy away from the big stage after uncorking a killer 18-5 rally in the fourth frame en route to the explosive start.
Veteran Tim Tianzon took the rookie-laden La Salle under her wings, registering 17 points on 14 hits, two blocks and an ace aside from 12 digs and 13 receptions.
Sophomore Jolina Dela Cruz added 13 markers and 10 receptions while Thea Gagate (10 points on five blocks), Leila Cruz (9) and Jyne Soreno (8) were solid in their first UAAP seniors games.
“It’s a very crucial game for us especially with a lot of rookies on our squad. We had first-game jitters but as you saw, we came back. It was not easy but we just trusted each other,” said La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus.
