UAAP calls off coming events

John Bryan Ulanday - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) has followed the lead of other local leagues in temporarily calling off its events amid the novel coronavirus threat.

In a statement released yesterday, the league indefinitely postponed all of its sports events starting Feb. 15 to ensure the safety of the community.

“The University Athletic Association of the Philippines upholds, in the highest regard, the well- being, health and safety of the League’s community – players, coaches, students, their families and fans in general,” said UAAP Season 82 president Em Fernandez and executive director Rebo Saguisag.

Included in the list of cancelled events is the anticipated opening of the 82nd UAAP women’s and men’s volleyball tournaments this weekend at the MOA Arena in Pasay City.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) last week also suspended its juniors events.
