Next Gilas coach could be European
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine men’s basketball team could be handled by a European coach in the future.
This after the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) bared it is immediately looking for a replacement for Yeng Guiao, who resigned following Gilas Pilipinas' winless campaign in the recently concluded FIBA World Cup in China.
A report by Spin.phn on Tuesday quoted SBP president Al Panlilio as saying the next Gilas coach could either be a local or a foreign one.
Panlilio said Guiao himself suggested that the national team be sent to Europe for regular trainings in preparation for international stints. Guiao likewise brought up the idea of tapping a European coach to help the squad adopt a European style of play.
The last time the Nationals were coached by a European was from 2009-2011, under Serbian Rajko Toroman.
The Philippines will co-host the 2023 FIBA World Cup with Japan and Indonesia.
