Dismal start doomed Gilas vs Italy, says Ateneo's Baldwin

MANILA, Philippines — Gilas Pilipinas was given a rude welcome in the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China, absorbing a 46-point beatdown at the hands of Italy, 62-108, on Saturday.
After a sluggish start, the Nationals just couldn't gain momentum.
Gilas was limited to a mere eight points in the first 10 minutes of play, trailing 8-37.
For former Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tab Baldwin, the dismal opening quarter was what ultimately doomed the Filipino cagers.

"I think that the first quarter was really unfortunate that we didn't get some shots and get going," Baldwin said in an interview.
"When the disparity is there between the two teams, you really need to get a good start to gain that belief and that confidence that you could go on and compete," he said.
Baldwin was head coach of Gilas from 2014 to 2016, replacing Chot Reyes.
He is currently the head coach of defending UAAP champions Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles and also serves as a consultant for Gilas.
