Optimistic Robredo rallies behind Gilas
MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Leni Robredo expressed her support for Gilas Pilipinas during her "BISErbisyong Leni" radio show on Sunday.
Talking with co-host Ely Saludar, Robredo declared her support for the Filipino cagers.
"Alam natin kung gaano ka-grabe magtrabaho iyong ating mga players sa Gilas... ang kailangan [nila] ngayon dahil haharap sa mga matitinding laban, ang kailangan suporta natin. Pampalakas ng loob," Robredo said.
Earlier this week, President Rodrigo Duterte made comments about Gilas' chances in the FIBA World Cup.

The president said that the cagers would surely lose to the much taller Italy squad.
He also said to bet on the Chinese squad instead.
Robredo, meanwhile, had a more positive message for the Gilas ballers.
"Talagang parati naman tayong dehado sa lahat, pero pinapaita natin na kahit tayo dehado, lumalaban talaga tayo nang tunay," Robredo said.
"Kaya sa mga Gilas players, maraming salamat po sa pag-represent ninyo sa ating bansa. Proud kami sa inyo," she said.

Gilas Pilipinas recently concluded their tuneup games in Spain where they finished with a 3-1 record.
They are set to begin their World Cup stint against Italy on August 31.
