MANILA, Philippines — As the Philippines welcomed the FIBA Baskeball World Cup Trophy in the latest stop of its 24-country tour, Gilas Pilipinas coach Yeng Guiao said he longs for the day when the handsome Naismith hardware could be ours for good.

For now, he admitted the most Gilas can aspire for in the next global meet set Aug. 31-Sept. 15 in China would be the Top 16.

“Bawal pala hawakan, gusto ko sana hawakan (I wanted to touch it but it’s not allowed),” said Guiao during yesterday’s press launch for the Trophy Tour. “We’re just glad the World Cup Trophy is here. This is something we’re really dreaming of. But of course, up to now, it’s still a dream. We’ll try our best to make the most of our performance in China.”

Guiao joined Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Al Panlilio and executive director Sonny Barrios, PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial, and Gilas naturalized player Andray Blatche in ushering in a series of activities for the trophy’s Phl stop.

The trophy goes on display at Gateway Mall July 27 and then at the Green Gate of the Smart Araneta Coliseum the next day. The trophy will be presented at centercourt during halftime of Sunday’s semifinal game between TNT KaTropa and Barangay Ginebra at the Big Dome to highlight activities.

“We’re so privileged and blessed that the trophy is in Phl  and it’s an indication of the importance FIBA has given the Phl and basketball-loving Filipinos,” said Guiao.
