Winky’s right: Father Time is undefeated

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

LAS VEGAS – Manny Pacquiao will be paid $10 million, and will get much more when everything else comes in, to fight Keith “One Time” Thurman and Father Time.

Pacquiao will be up against two undefeated opponents.

“Pacquiao is tough. But Father Time is undefeated. Father Time beats everybody,” said retired champion Winky Wright.

The former light-middleweight champion enjoyed a ring record of 51 wins, six losses and a draw until he retired in 2012.

Wright had lost his last three fights, all on points, when he decided to call it quits. He was 40 years old then – right about Pacquiao’s age now.

During a round-table discussion here last Wednesday, Wright, who’s now 47, warned Pacquiao of Father Time.

Boxers, he said, can grow old overnight.

“We were all great at one time. But like I said, Father Time is undefeated,” said Wright, who has his money on Thurman.

Pacquiao’s opponent was only 16 when he was called in as Wright’s sparring partner. That explains their relationship.

Wright said Pacquiao, who may earn as much as $20 million for this fight, while Thurman gets a guaranteed purse of $2.5 million plus a little more, is courting danger on Saturday.

“Manny Pacquiao looks good on the mitts and the bags, but those don’t hit back. Keith Thurman hits back,” said Wright.

He may be right.
