Andray Blatche: Our offense will flow
MANILA, Philippines — Well aware of the delicate situation of Gilas Pilipinas, naturalized player Andray Blatche promised to do his best to help Team Phl out of the bind and salvage a ticket to the FIBA World Cup in China late this year.
Blatche wasted no time buckling down to work the morning after his arrival in the country late Friday night.
The 6-foot-11, nine-year NBA veteran worked out with Rain or Shine players and fellow Gilas pool members Gabe Norwood, Raymond Almazan and Beau Belga in a shoot-around at the Meralco Gym in Pasig yesterday morning.
“I’m aware about the situation. We’re just gonna go and take care of business,” said Blatche after the workout where he’s shown the system run by coach Yeng Guiao.
Also there was Gilas assistant coach Caloy Garcia.
“Our offense is always gonna flow. It’s more about stopping the other team. As long as we go out there prepared, and play our game, I’m very confident,” Blatche said.
Blatche had dinner with Guiao and Gilas team manager Butch Antonio upon the player’s arrival from China.
“We talked over dinner when he arrived, and he understands the urgency of the situation. He gave me the assurance that he will do his best to get us in the World Cup,” said Guiao.
Time, however, is not on Gilas’ side as Blatche will be in the country for only a few days and has to fly back to China to play crucial games in the CBA before rejoining Team Phl in Doha for the game against Qatar on Feb. 21.
Still, Guiao is hopeful they can win their last two games against Qatar and Kazakhstan and have a shot at a FIBA World Cup ticket.
The Gilas pool starts its first full-time practice session with Blatche Monday.
