Angelo Que fires 72 in rain-hit Singapore Open

Dante Navarro - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Angelo Que slowed down with a one-over 72 but remained confident of clinching a spot in the weekend play of the rain-interrupted Singapore Open at Sentosa Golf Club’s Serapong Course.

The power-hitting Filipino completed his first round play early yesterday  with a three-under 68 card for joint 13th. He, however,  hardly recovered from a two-bogey mishap at the back in his second round stint, mixing two birdies against a bogey in his homeward frontside trip to settle for a 72 and a 140 after 36 holes of the $1 million event kicking off the 2019 Asian Tour.

He was at joint 30th with half of the 156-player field still to complete play at presstime.

Among those still out on the fairways are Miguel Tabuena, whose impressive 67 Thursday put him just two behind Thai Poom Saksansin and Japanese Taihei Sato, who churned out a pair of late 65s to wrest control of the field bannered by last year’s winner and former Masters champion Sergio Garcia, who carded a 69.

Tabuena, however, fumbled with a bogey after three holes in the second round but Jobim Carlos, who opened with a decent 70, gunned down a birdie after five holes.

Like Que, former Asian Tour No. 1 Juvic Pagunsan finished his second round play, turning in a wild 70 that put the smooth-swinging ace at joint 54th.

Pagunsan bounced back form a bogey mishap on No. 3 with an eagle on the par-5 fourth, birdied the next but dropped two strokes on No. 6. He bogeyed the seventh but birdied the ninth for an even 36.

Just when he thought he had the par-72 course all figured out with birdies on Nos. 11 and 13, he bogeyed the next two holes but holed out with a birdie on the par-5 18th for that 70 and a 141.

Saksansin shot a 70 to keep the clubhouse lead at 135 with Ryder Cup veteran Paul Casey who fired a 67, one ahead of Sato, who settled for an even par 71.
