Altas rip Red Lions in NCAA volley opener
MANILA, Philippines — Perpetual Help went to other sources of power when reigning MVP Jobert Almodiel struggled as it smashed San Beda, 25-20, 25-23, 25-15, to set in motion its title-retention bid in the men’s division of the 94th NCAA volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan Friday night.
Power-hitting Ridzuan Muhali uncorked a match-high 14 points that all came on kills while Ronniel Rosales scattered 13 hits that included four blocks and two service aces that more than made up for Almodiel’s slow day.
Almodiel, who was named rookie MVP a season ago, had a sputtering start and finished with just 10 points but he made up for it by playing defense as he finished with nine receptions that helped the Altas, who are seeking a 12th crown, gain an early share of the lead with Arellano, which downed Jose Rizal, 25-21, 25-18, 25-21.
“We showed that we are a well-rounded team and all the players are ready to contribute if given a chance,” said Perpetual Help coach Sammy Acaylar.
Like the senior counterparts, the Junior Altas were impressive on their first game since winning it all a year back as they overpowered the Cubs, 25-15, 25-13, 25-12.
Noel Michael Kampton towered above everyone else and unleashed a match-best 15 points as the Las Piñas-based spikers opened their bid for an 11th high school championship on the right track.
