Altas, Chiefs open volley title defense
MANILA, Philippines — Perpetual Help and Arellano University start their title defense, with the former playing opposite San Beda in the men’s division and the latter facing Jose Rizal in the women’s side at the start of the 94th NCAA volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan today.
The Sammy Acaylar-mentored Altas swept the elimination round in nine games but needed to undergo the full, three-game route to beat the Chiefs in the finals to claim their 11th men’s championship last year.
Reigning MVP Joebert Almodiel will have loads to carry as he will spearhead a youth-laden team following the departure of Rey Taneo, Warren Catipay and Jack Kalingking.
The Perpetual Help-SBU showdown is set at 4 p.m.
“Our goal has always been to win the championship and we want it more to win this year because Perpetual Help is the Season 94 host,” said Perpetual Help coach Sammy Acaylar.
The Lady Chiefs, who swept the San Beda Red Spikers in two games to snare their third crown, jumpstart their campaign against the Lady Bombers at 12 noon.
