MANILA, Philippines — Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo is hoping to get his German visa approved and stamped in time so he could compete in the Cottbus World Cup scheduled Nov. 22 to 25.

Gymastics Association of the Philippines president Cynthia Carrion is working double time to expedite the issuance of Yulo’s visa.

“It takes two weeks to get the visa,” said Carrion of the tedious process which, if hurdled, would allow the 18-year-old Yulo to see action in the event that has attracted top gymnasts from 24 countries.

As of yesterday, Yulo’s name was not in the list of entries.

Yulo is fresh from a breakthrough medal finish in the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Doha, Qatar over the weekend. From Doha, he flew back to Japan with his coach, Munehiro Kugimiya.

The soft-spoken gymnast, who hails from Leveriza in Manila, became the first Filipino and first gymnast from Southeast Asia to win a medal in the World Artistic Championships.

“I’m working hard to get his visa,” said Carrion, who added that International Gymastics Federation president Morinari Watanabe of Japan is helping Yulo facilitate his German visa.
