Dasmariñas chessers rule Batang Pinoy

MANILA, Philippines — International Master Daniel Quizon, Woman International Master Kylen Joy Mordido and Michael Concio Jr. dominated their respective events in standard chess to deliver three golds for Dasmariñas City in the Batang Pinoy National Championships at the Beneco Multi-purpose Hall in Baguio City yesterday.

Quizon scored 4.5 points to win the boys’ 15-under crown for the third straight year in the five-round, Swiss System tournament. The 13-year-old prodigy, who racked up four wins before settling for a draw against Koronadal City’s Chrisus Sarchez, is also gunning to defend his blitz and rapid diadems.

Jave Peteros of Cebu City placed second with 3.5 points while Reishi Polan of Tubigon, Bohol took the bronze with three points.

Mordido also swept her first four games before splitting the point with Rhea Rafols of Gen. Santos City to earn 4.5 points for the gold. Rafols bagged the silver with four points while Pasig City’s Josemier Panol scored three points for third.

Concio, on the other hand, topped the boys’ 13-U to underscore Dasmariñas City’s domination of the sport.

At the Baguio Athletic Bowl, another Dasmariñas City bet nailed his third gold medal as Jason Jabol teamed up with Jherwin Ricaforte, Charles Antones and Lord Angel Santos to rule the boys 4x100m relay on a 44.83 second-clocking.

Jabol, 15, earlier swept the sprint races, posting 11.59 seconds in the 100m dash and 22.70 seconds in the 200m dash.

Meanwhile, Cebu Province reaped seven golds behind Nicole Marie del Rosario in mass start, individual time trial and criterium in cycling and the girls’ 14-15 duathlon and Jeanna Mariel Canete in road race, ITT and criterium for girls 13-14.

Del Rosario clinched top honors in girls’ 14-15 duathlon in 28.58 at the Baguio City Athletic Bowl before transferring to nearby Wright Park for another best clocking of 10 minutes, 29 seconds in individual time trial. She also topped the criterium Tuesday then rebounded from a Top 10 finish in triathlon by clocking 10:43.11 in road race.

Janine Narboada, Trexie Ogoc and Precious Belicario delivered title-clinching feats and grabbed three golds for Cebu Province in the kumite events in karatedo at SM Baguio.

As of 3 p.m. yesterday, Laguna, overall champion in the first edition of the event in 1999, led 105 other LGUs in the medal board with 18 golds, five silvers and 13 bronzes followed by host and defending overall champion Baguio City’s 17 gold, 28 silver and 32 bronze medals.

Quezon City piled 15-7-6 for a third-best effort, Lucena City collected 13-5-1 while Cebu City amassed 10-12-17 to complete the top five.

Cebu Province is close at 10-6-12 at sixth.
