UP Lady Maroons end long spell, claim PVL title

MANILA, Philippines — University of the Philippines basked in glory as it shocked Far Eastern University, 25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 20-25, 15-13, to capture its first major title in 36 years in the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference Season 2 at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan last night.

The Lady Maroons blew a 2-0 set lead and a commanding 8-0 and 13-4 start in the third but bucked letdowns in the frame and in the fourth as well as a 7-13 deficit in the decider as they secured their first title in the league and their first major crown since ruling the UAAP in 1982 in front of a predominantly maroon-clad crowd.

UP stared at a 7-13 deficit in the fifth set but Lycha Ebon stumbled on an attack error anew then Ayel Estrañero and newly minted conference MVP Isa Molde picked it up from there as they powered the Lady Maroons to the crown.

“Sobrang happy kasi parang pang-UAAP na din ’to,” said Molde, who received the conference MVP honors before the game and was awarded with the Finals MVP after the match.
