JAKARTA – Away from basketball for a while, three-time PBA champion coach Ryan Gregorio is now completely back with his appointment as Special Assistant to the President (SAP) in the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Friday.

The appointment came while Gregorio is in the thick of Team Philippines’ campaign in the 18th Asian Games men’s basketball competition here where he serves as among the assistants of head coach Yeng Guiao.

The head of Sports Youth Advocacy in Meralco, Gregorio is now to work closely with SBP president Al Panlilio on his additional position.

“The SAP is a professional who works directly to assist and provide the president with highly personalized support and advice regarding but not limited to human resource, executive and administrative duties; manage and facilitate the workflow of the Office of the President, provide support and delegation to different areas of the organization,” his appointment paper stated.

Gregorio is the lead scout in the current Philippine quintet, who along with Ford Arao and Ricky Umayam, breaks down the game of the opposition and the individual players of the opposing team to help the head coach map out the game plan.

Because of the technology, Gregorio is able to give each Filipino player the videos that they can review at anytime and wherever they are.

It was his same job when he came on board at Purefoods to help coach Eric Altamirano steer the Purefoods Corned Beef Cowboys to the 1997 PBA All-Filipino championship.

“My communications degree, major in film, came in handy,” said Gregorio, on his job with Purefoods then and with Team Philippines now.
