Defense, more than offense, towed Gilas past higher-seeded Brazil says Pringle
BOCAUE, Bulacan — FIBA 3X3 is not a global event for nothing. And it’s exactly what Gilas Pilipinas prepared for, according to Stanley Pringle.
“It was so fast-paced, but we were prepared for it,” he told the press shortly after upsetting 6th-seeded Brazil, Saturday afternoon in the World Cup hostilities at the Philippine Arena here.
The Filipinos saw a well-rounded effort from its four-man crew. Pringle had accounted for four points—all of which coming from exploiting his defender through isolation.
“Three on three… there are only six players on the court so there’s more space than 10 players so it gives me more freedom to move around,” he said of his offensive performance.
But more than the balanced production, the guard out of the GlobalPort Batang Pier, said it was actually mettle in protecting the rim that pulled them past their first assignment.
“I think it was playing real physical,” Pringle said of the key to the win. "They were playing physical, too, but we didn’t shy from it. But I think it was our defense.”
“We gotta win three out of four so this is definitely good for us,” he said.
Pringle and the rest of the Gilas squad will try to ride on the win’s momentum as they take on the Mongolians who recently lost to the Candians. They face off at 6:40 p.m. to cap off Day 2 action.
