Bulldogs halt rallying Altas
MANILA, Philippines — Matthew Aquino hit a clutch jumper as National U warded off Perpetual Help, 69-61, in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan yesterday.
The Bulldogs actually appeared headed for a rout after posting leads of many as 21 points late in the third period. But NU coach Jamike Jarin opted to pull out his starters and give the rest a chance to play and gain experience.
But the Altas cashed in on the chance with Edgar Charcos leading Perpetual’s comeback to within, 61-65.
But Aquino came through with a buzzer-beater and Rev Diputado stole the ball from Charcos to quell the Altas surge.
JV Gallego hit two free throws to ice the victory, NU’s third straight after dropping its first three games in Group A.
The Altas, who drew 17 markers from Charcos, fell to 0-5.
John Galinato led NU with 12 points while Aquino finished with 11 points, including five in the stretch, six rebounds, and three shot blocks.
