Ceres gains final despite loss
MANILA, Philippines — Ceres Negros FC advanced to the AFC Cup Asean Zone final for the second straight year after surviving a heated second-leg duel with semis rival Yangon United of Myanmar last night at Thuwunna Stadium Yangon.
The Busmen won the semis series on aggregate, 6-5, to get the chance to defend the zonal title against Singapore’s Home United. Home beat Indonesia’s Persija Jakarta also on aggregate, 6-3, to arrange a rematch with Ceres.
Yangon actually took the victory in the second leg of the two-game semis series, 3-2, but it wasn’t enough to erase the Busmen’s advantage from their 4-2 triumph in the first match over in Bacolod.
The Burmese side came out charging and scored barely two minutes in with Uchida Kosuke drawing first blood, then the Philippine titlists drew level seven minutes later with Manny Ott finishing off a brilliant set-up by Stephan Schrock.
