MANILA, Philippines — What initially looked like a walk in the park for the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons turned out to be a tough workout.
UP needed five sets to repulse the University of the East Lady Warriors 25-19, 25-13, 21-25, 16-25, 15-8 in Sunday's UAAP season 80 women's volleyball tournament at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.
After coasting through the first two sets, the Lady Maroons' solid defense was nowhere to be found as the Lady Warriors rode on Judith Abil's heroics to extend the match to a decider.
New head coach Godfrey Okumu admitted that the squad relaxed after winning the first two sets.
"We didn't pass well," rued the Kenyan coach.
"That's my philosophy. In volleyball, if you don't pass well it's hard," he said.
Team captain Tots Carlos paced the Lady Maroons with 22 points while former rookie of the year Isa Molde added 20.
Abil led the Lady Warriors with 12 points, May Ann Mendrez chipped in 10.
The Lady Maroons will face the defending champions De La Salle University next at the FilOil Flying-V Centre in San Juan on Saturday.
