Standhardinger leads Fil-fors in PBA draft
MANILA, Philippines — Fil-German Christian Standhardinger, who has endeared himself with the basketball-loving Filipinos with his remarkable stint with Team Gilas in three recent international competitions, has joined the coming PBA Draft, guaranteeing a talent-laden batch of Fil-foreign players seeking to play in Asia’s first play-for-pay hoop.
The 6-foot-7 Standhardinger, who played for Team Phl in the Jones Cup and FIBA Asia Cup and anchored the Gilas Cadet squad’s title romp in the SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, submitted his application through email to PBA commissioner Chito Narvasa early Monday.
The 28-year-old Standhardinger became an instant celebrity among Filipinos, who marveled at his hard-nosed style of play in the three tournaments.
He is expected to be among, if not the top pick in the rookie draft set Oct. 29.
Standhardinger, who normed 11.8 points and 7.4 rebounds for the national team in the Jones Cup and upped his scoring in the Asia Cup to 15.5 markers and 6.5 boards, has actually signed up with the Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions in the ASEAN Basketball League.
Also in the PBA draft roster are Fil-Americans Jason Perkins, Davon Potts and Fil-Swede Andreas Cahilig, who powered the Cignal Hawkeyes to a conference sweep of the PBA D-League Aspirants’s Cup and Foundation Cup championships.
Completing the pool of this Fil-foreign aspirants are Fil-Ams Roberth Herndon and Julian Sargent, Fil-Israeli Felix Apreku and Fil-Canadian Zachary Nichols.
The four also made waves with their respective teams in the PBA Developmental League.
