Tiongson shines with 1st PBA Player of the Week plum
MANILA, Philippines – Juami Tiongson has found a home with the NLEX Road Warriors.
After spending much of his first 2 PBA seasons on the bench at Blackwater, followed by a stint in the PBA D-League last year, Tiongson is now making the most of his return to the pro league.
Sunday saw the former Ateneo guard having a breakout game with 21 points, four assists, one steal and one block, serving as a catalyst in NLEX’s 109-99 win over GlobalPort.
The 26-year-old playmaker was at his best in the final canto when he buried four of his five 3-point shots, which gave the Road Warriors the separation needed against a Batang Pier side that played without Stanley Pringle.
Tiongson, the 12th overall pick in the 2014 PBA Rookie Draft, went on to earn his first PBA Press Corps Player of the Week, besting the likes of Ginebra big men Japeth Aguilar and Greg Slaughter, Alaska forward Calvin Abueva, Blackwater slotman JP Erram and guard Mike DiGregorio, TNT’s Jayson Castro and Roger Pogoy, and GlobalPort forward Sean Anthony and Terrence Romeo.
The NLEX young guard is averaging career-high numbers of 8.0 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists this conference.
NLEX won’t be back in action until September 13 when it faces sister team TNT. It will then collide with Star in the final playdate of the eliminations on September 24.
Winning both games will give the Road Warriors one of the top 4 spots in the quarterfinals that include a twice-to-beat incentive.
