Perlas BanKo wards off Adamson
MANILA, Philippines - Perlas BanKo nearly blew a two-set lead but recovered in time to repulse Adamson-Akari, 25-18, 25-16, 21-25, 25-21, and break into the win column after three games in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference at the Filoil Center in San Juan last night.
Nicole Tiamzon came away with back-to-back aces while Kathy Bersola delivered the match-clinching kill as the Perlas Spikers closed the fourth set with a 5-0 binge and completed their fightback from 7-13 down.
Tiamzon topscored with 14 points, Bersola had 13 markers, Amanda Villanueva logged 12 hits while Amy Ahomiro added 10 points for Perlas, which produced 11 aces and nine blocks to make up for its 28 errors.
Jema Galanza punched in 18 points for the Lady Falcons, who slid to 0-2 for joint sixth with UP and the Power Smashers.
Perlas BanKo dominated the first two frames and looked headed for a sweep as it led Adamson-Akari, 16-11, in the third. But the Perlas Spikers ran into a spate of miscues while Galanza came through with timely hits as Adamson-Akari rallied to extend the match.
The Lady Falcons kept pouncing on their rivals’ miscues and even led at 13-7. But the Perlas Spikers unleashed a strong finishing kick to clinch the victory.
That included a five-hit binge, turning a 20-21 deficit into a four-point victory with Bersola wrapping up the set and the match with a kill off an Adamson poor reception.
Meanwhile, Pocari Sweat, behind Myla Pablo, held off the Power Smashers, 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 20-25, 15-11, late Saturday to stay on top with a 3-0 mark.
