MANILA, Philippines — Jeron Teng exploded for 35 points as he towed Flying V to its second win, a 119-105 blowout of Gamboa Coffee Mix to stay on top of the heap in the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup Monday at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
The former La Salle standout ignited the rout for the Thunder, unfurling 20 markers in the first half as they broke off, 60-48 at halftime thanks to their mercurial 57-percent shooting from the field.
Teng shot 12-of-19 from the field, while also hauling down three rebounds, and three assists in the game.
“Just like usual, Jeron carried us in the first half. And when he got in foul trouble, it was Eric (Salamat) naman carried through for us,” said coach Eric Altamirano.
Eric Salamat had a woeful 6-of-15 shooting, but still was able to grab 15 of his 20 markers in the second half, together with four assists.
Gab Banal registered 15 points and eight rebounds, while Hans Thiele had 12 points, five rebounds, and two blocks in the win for Flying V (2-0).
Though victorious, Altamirano raised a lot of concerns with how his team fared on the defensive end, saying, “I wasn’t really happy because I felt we didn’t assert ourselves defensively today. It’s good that we won, but I’m not satisfied and we need to work on our defense because our opponent scored more than 100 points.”
Val Acuña led the Coffee Lovers with 22 points, while Mark Sarangay tallied a double-double of 18 markers and 17 rebounds in the team’s first loss in the tourney.
In the second game, Cignal HD continued its ascent in the tourney with a 107-69 hammering of Zark’s Burger.
Andreas Cahilig made the most of the extended garbage time in the second half, pouring 15 points, three rebounds, and two assists to topscore for the Hawkeyes’ second straight victory.
Raymar Jose unfurled 12 markers and 17 boards to lead the breakaway, while Jason Perkins and Davon Potts combined for 20 points.
The Hawkeyes jumped to a 10-2 lead and went on cruise control after that, erecting a lead as high as 43, 94-51, with a Dan Sara jumper with 6:10 remaining in the payoff period and add to the Jawbreakers’ woes this early in the conference.
Coach Boyet Fernandez, though, noted that Cignal must learn from its miscues in the game as they brace for tougher foes ahead.
“We just have to be ready every game. May mga ginagawa kami na bad behaviors at di namin dapat gawin yun. Sana lang matuto kami kasi sunod-sunod ang laro and we’re playing tougher teams after this,” he said.
Robby Celiz carried the load for Zark’s (0-2) with 20 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Jerome Ferrer had 12 markers and 10 boards, while RR de Leon got 12 points and five rebounds.
