Bombers nip Warriors; Teodoro shines anew
MANILA, Philippines - Teytey Teodoro took charge in the clutch again as Jose Rizal University repulsed University of the East, 67-62, to notch its second straight win in the Filoil Flying V Premier Cup in San Juan yesterday.
Teodoro hit three triples and finished with a game-high 20 points to power the Bombers to the Group A lead with a 2-0 mark. Teodoro also dropped 17 markers, including five points in the last quarter, in JRU’s shock 85-81 win over UAAP champion La Salle last week.
“I kept on telling him that he needs to lead by example and let his teammates get involved in the plays,” said JRU coach Vergel Meneses of Teodoro. “The more he gets everybody involved, the more it will be easier for him.”
In posting their twin victories, the Kalentong-based cagers also broke La Salle and UE’s vaunted trapping defense with efficient passing.
“The key to breaking the press is to make the extra pass and so far, we’re successful on that department,” said Meneses.
The Bombers also drew solid backup from foreign reinforcements Abdel Poutouchi and Abdul Razak Abdul Wahab, who combined for 10 points and 19 rebounds.
The Warriors, who were led by Alvin Pasaol’s 10 points, dropped to 1-1 after edging the Ateneo Eagles, 72-71, last Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Eagles snapped a two-game skid by nipping the Letran Knights, 78-76, in the other match.
