Group launches signature drive to save Rizal Memorial Sports Complex

MANILA, Philippines — A group advocating for awareness and preservation of cultural, historical and religious heritage sites in the country called out Manila mayor Joseph Estrada amid talks that the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex will be converted to a shopping mall.
Advocates for Heritage Preservation and Pamanlahi said the construction of another mall is not necessary since there are a lot of malls already and it will only contribute to the "traffic chaos."
"How many more times must we cry, moan and hurl spears at the direction of those whose powers are used for destruction, diminution and desecration of our Filipino build heritage?" the statement, released Monday, December 19, read.
They also listed several demolished or renovated heritage sites including the Admiral Hotel, the Army-Navy Club, the Mehan Garden and the Manila Jai Alai Building.
The group of business tycoon Enrique Razon earlier said the RMSC is not safe for athletes and unprofitable since it has not undergone structural and facilities improvement in a while.
The Philippine Sports Commission, which is holding office in the facility, is considering moving their office to the planned "Philippine Sports City" in Clark, Pampanga.
Earlier this month, a petition calling for the improvement of RMSC, and the redevelopment of the nearby Harrison Plaza into an open and green space was put up online.
It has garnered over 7,527 signatures as of posting time.
