MANILA, Philippines – St. Benilde officially appointed former pro Tyrone Tang as its new senior basketball coach with hopes of turning its fortunes in the NCAA.
The entry of the 32-year-old Tang, who will debut as a coach after winning championships with La Salle in 2007 and Rain or Shine in the PBA in 2012, should be a big shot in the arm for a team that has failed to make the Final Four in the last four years under Velasco.
"Yes, TY Tang is the new coach," said a source from St. Benilde.
Velasco's best finish as coach in his four years with the Blazers came three years ago when they finished fifth with an 11-7 (win-loss) record.
He also compiled a 22-50 slate coaching St. Benilde, which finished 10th and dead last this season with a 1-17 mark.
